BEGINNER LINOCUT WORKSHOP – BLOCK PRINTING
A practical introductory workshop exploring the linocut technique, focused on the design, carving, and printing of a linoleum block.
The workshop covers the main stages of the process: from preparing the design and transferring it onto the block, to using carving gouges, controlling the carved line, and creating the final print.
TECHNICAL PROGRAM
Introduction to linocut and the principles of block printing
Introduction to carving materials and tools
Proper use of carving gouges and control of the carving movement
Preparation of the linoleum block
Transferring the design onto the block
Understanding the relationship between marks, positive and negative space
Defining positive and negative areas
Carving lines, contours, solid areas, and details
Controlling the direction and depth of the cut
Preparing the block for printing
Introduction to inking techniques
Creating a hand-printed impression from the carved block
A selection of original designs created specifically for the workshop will be provided for practice. The designs are carefully selected to gradually introduce participants to the main technical challenges of linocut.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the workshop, participants will have acquired the fundamental skills needed to:
use carving tools correctly and safely;
prepare and carve a simple linoleum block;
control the direction, pressure, and depth of the carved line;
understand the relationship between carved and printable surfaces;
understand the basic principles of inking and printing;
independently create a simple block for block printing.
The carved block and the handmade stamp created during the workshop are yours to keep.
